I love Carnival!!. Trinidad's carnival! Once a year my senses rejoice at the opportunity to douse my soul with intoxicating soca music, shed my cares and fears, and temporarily transfer my spirit into the mas. (S. Drakes)

Who chupid idea it was for Carnival to come after Christmas??

Christmas is a very important time in Trinidad &Tobago. It is the fusion of the end of year excitement while ushering the imminent carnival season. When I look at it in retrospect, I wondered exactly who chupid idea it was to put carnival after Christmas. I know Christmas is about the birth of Christ and therefore I shouldn’t even be writing this post but I just think that these two festivals should be held far apart.

Here are some of the reasons why I think carnival should be held before Christmas

The high calorie Pastelle, Ponche de crème, Ham, fruitcake, black cake, wine, sweet bread, sorrel, ginger beer and the works assosicated with xmas just makes you gain more weight .

Trying to not eat traditional Christmas foods takes some serious will power.( yuh have to watch them and cry)

Yuh trying to Sing Yvonne, Anita, Noel and Jump wave all in the same breath.

The fact that yuh hardly get time to go to the gym because yuh busy shopping up a storm or cleaning up yuh house.

The fact that yuh does spend out most of yuh money trying to do all kinda thing during the Christmas season. (paint de house, change de carpet, tile the floor.)

Yuh does be invited to all these Christmas wing-dings all over the place that loaded with food and drinks.

Yuh fussing with both yuh carnival itinerary and christmas itinerary at the same time.

After going through both Christmas and carnival yuh bank book and credit card does have a negative balance.

Try covering up in a down coat, hat, scarf, long johns, boots, & even ear muffs to leave your house to shovel your driveway to go the gym coz you better get in shape. Try passing up the nanimo bars, candy cane ice cream, snow balls, gingerbread, yule logs, rum balls, figgy pudding, shortbread, fudge, egg nog, petit fours, caramel corn, pumpkin cheesecake, peanut brittle, sugar cookies, boxes of chocolates, wreath cake, hot buttered rum, mincemeat pie, almond bark, cider, stuffing, cheese balls, sweet potato pie, hot chocolate w baileys, that is everywhere you go Nov 1 - Jan 2.

I think Carnival dates ha to do with tradtionaly being a pre-lenten festival, hence the reason why it is kept before Easter. Anyways, other islands have their carnivals in "summer" which is not a bad idea, I like crop over in August.

But Kevian girl that food for Christmas is a KILLER :S

I never saw the spam in action.
anyway, I love the food yes that is why my plan was to lose enought weight before going to Florida for xmas so I could eat whatever, then come back and hopefully would be on some normal level I could deal with before I hit the carnival.
Pumpkin pie yummy. The only thing about eng food for xmas is that its the same as a traditional Sunday dinner.

Yeah, Saucy is right. The date for Carnival is determined by the Lenten season. Remember, Carnival (carne vale or farewell to teh flesh) was traditionally on final drunken free for all before the austerity of Lent. I like where our Carnival is. Wouldn't change it for the world. Yeah, nice pix.

My must have food for Christmas is pastelle, turkey and sorrel!! I do not eat pork so don't care for the ham,I don't like black cake, ponch de creme or ginger beer so no worries there.

Thing is, my husband loves plenty snacks so I buy alot of that for Christmas!! Pringles, Cheese balls,Danish Cookies in the tin :D, marshmallows, viva puffs and the list goes on!!!Those are the things I have to stay away from for Christmas, that and the scotch and wine :S

Lol! Pastelle is my weakness. The only thing I miss about not eating meat is pastelle. But my moms does season some soya within an inch of its life and it does go down good! Fish pastelle eh bad too. When I say pastelle I mean cornmeal pastelle eh, not that flour pastelle I only learnt about from an ex of mine a few years ago. Steups. Worked out fine for me because I used to eat all the cornmeal pastelle his mother made for him and leave the flour for him. Oh, and doh EVER eat pastelle in Venezuela eh! Terrible! Thing thick and have boil egg and thing in it! Yuck!

LOLOLOL But Kevian Carnival is BEFORE Christmas on a yearly calender. Its just that as Christmas at the end and Carnival at teh begin it runs into each otehr too close together. You real make me laugh with that one. Buh I doh feel they should move it, the dates selected have its own history with the French and the lenten season etc. So much of our Carnival has already disappeared.
